Panicked Callers

Let’s talk about the panicked caller. You get them, right? I have talked to hundreds of dispatchers and they all talk about how difficult it is when the person is in panic. I heard a really great tip the other day that I want to share with you. The dispatcher had 9 years’ experience and was talking about what she does when she gets a panicked caller. She gives them a small task to do. People feel useful and begin to calm when they have something to do. Maybe there is a way they can assist the victim (CPR, talking quietly to them, sitting them down), maybe it is in identifying their location (you can ask them to describe the area, find some mail, look at the house number.)

Next time you get a panicked one, give them a small task to get them calmed and easier to talk to during the crisis. Don’t forget to follow us here and on Facebook. See you next time!!
