Unknown Outcomes

Today we want to talk about the unknown outcomes of the calls you take. Many times, you have to take calls and you don’t get to hear what happened to those involved. This can add stress to an already stressful situation. So, what do you do about this?

One of the things that we have learned about as we research information to help you is that you need to be able to talk about what you have experienced. Sure, you cannot go out and talk to every person on the street about what you have experienced, but it is important to develop a culture within your center of sharing with one another. Find another dispatcher that you can talk with and unload what is going on with you. No other person will understand more than a dispatcher.

Also, take time, whether in the moment or later to process through the call. Many of us have been training to stuff our feelings and press on with what we are doing. It is important for you to process your stress and frustration so that it does not build up and explode.

If the unknown call continues to haunt you and you can’t get passed it, please seek a professional counselor. It is OK to admit that you cannot process every call on your own and that you need some professional help. That is it for today.
